He changed his own voice to fit in. But what was it costing him?
Imagine being a sensitive young boy with an open heart, growing up feeling that parts of who you are simply aren’t acceptable to the world around you.
Harrison Meagher knows what that feels like.
Growing up in Australia, he felt a clash between his sensitive nature and the culture around him, and from a young age, he began pushing down parts of himself to feel valued, worthy and loved.
But here’s the part that really caught my attention: he actually changed the way he spoke — adjusting his accent, tone and voice — so he could fit in.
And although it worked on the outside, the pain of suppressing who he really was eventually caught up with him.
Then came COVID. Isolated at home, unable to continue his business in the usual way, Harrison faced a choice: stop, or find another way forward.
He took his work online, stepped onto virtual stages, and began using his voice in a very different way — not to fit in, but to express who he really was.
In this episode of THE HEROES Podcast, we explore identity, self-worth, the price of fitting in, and what can happen when we finally start listening to the voice we’ve spent years trying to change.
How much of yourself have you changed just to be accepted by others?
